a Mixed-Use Building

A mixed-use building is a development that allows for more than one type of use in a building or set of buildings. It includes both commercial and residential space.

The prime example of a mixed-use property is a small storefront building with apartments above and retail below. The owner or operator of the building would lease out the downstairs space to a business owner, and rent out the residential spaces to tenants.

That said, there are other kinds of mixed-use properties that include units zoned for other purposes, such as for office space, storage, space, and so on. In the vast majority of mixed-use properties, the residential portion takes up more square footage than the commercial portion.
